Cool Stuff no.3

I think out of all the different cultures, so far, these have been my favorite. One of the things I wanted to know more about was the religion Jainism. According to Britannica Jainism is Indian religion teaching a path to spiritual purity and enlightenment through disciplined nonviolence (ahimsa, literally “noninjury”) to all living creatures.” As I was looking online for more facts Jainism I found a whole youtube channel with songs just for the Jainism religion, and they are called Jain songs. One of the songs I clicked on was called Nem Rajul Panthe’ I have no idea what the words were saying, but what I can tell you is that the piece started off with a piano melody which I thought was pretty interesting. Later on the tempo eventually picked up and it became an upbeat song. (link Below)
Another thing I wanted to know more about is Bollywood, because I've heard of it maybe one or twice but I never really put much thought into it. After doing some research according to CBBC UK Bollywood is the nickname given to the Indian film industry - it's a play on the word Hollywood.
The B comes from Bombay (also known as Mumbai), a big city in India.
Bollywood is massive. It makes up to 800 films a year - twice as many as Hollywood.” So Bollywood is the largest film industry in the world.
The last thing that I wanted to learn about was more modern day Indian singers. So with a little bit of researching I found  Guru Randhawa he is an Indian Pop star (born 30 August 1991) is an Indian singer, songwriter and music composer associated with Punjabi, Bhangra, Indi-pop and Bollywood music.” As I was looking up some of his music I found his song ‘Lahore’ on youtube. This one song alone has 817,212,713 views’ that is a crazy amount. Also with this song I have no idea what he is saying, but it is definitely a modern pop song with a bit of hip hop. It's actually pretty dope.

  1. I forgot she mentioned Jainism. It sounded really interesting. You have such a diverse blog here in terms of religion and music. I really enjoyed the songs as well.

  2. I'm quite a fan of Jainism's basic principles. The whole "do no harm" philosophy is right up my alley - and I can see how its music reflects its belief. It's very peaceful and calming.

  3. I also did not know much about Jainism so it was nice learning more about it. I also believe it interesting that there was a piano in the music because a lot of the music that we were hearing in class heavily revolved around the native instruments. I’ve actually heard of Bollywood before coming to class but I did not know that they produced more movies than Hollywood. Nice use of sources!

  4. I think the Jainism religion is really cool, and I liked the video you linked. I thought it was strange hearing a piano after not really hearing it in music for a month.

  5. Oh, I'm glad you followed up on Jainism--Dr. Fohr would be pleased! She actually spent time in India living with a group of Jainist nuns while she was working on her dissertation. It's a fairly grueling lifestyle, and not for the faint of heart.
